Category: cold steel shovel

The small infantry shovel (MPL-50), a versatile trenching tool used by the rank and file of the Red Army and the Armed Forces of the USSR, is 50 centimeters long and serves as an engineer's weapon. This compact shovel is designed to self-dig a single trench under enemy fire and can also be employed for camouflage, overcoming artificial obstacles on the battlefield, and as a cold weapon for hand-to-hand combat.

The small infantry shovel has had a significant impact on military art, with its emergence and adoption by almost all leading states. It has been known by various names, including the Linnemann's infantry shovel (Den Linnemannske Spade (M.1870)), trench shovel, and portable shovel, with the non-statutory name "sapper blade" or "skirt" being widely recognized.

The small infantry shovel is typically used while lying, kneeling, or sitting, depending on the situation. It is initially cut into the ground at an oblique angle, allowing it to slice through small roots found in the soil. The shovel is operated for 10-15 minutes, followed by a 5-10 minute rest period, enabling the user to work for longer durations with less fatigue compared to continuous use for 45-50 minutes.

The shovel measures 20.4 inches by 5.9 inches and weighs 1.7 pounds. It is constructed of metal and wood. At the end of the war, the covers were modified, featuring a closed back and riveted, narrow side edges. The cover is secured with a strap fastened to the button of a transverse belt, which connects the side edges. A leather hinge is sewn onto the back of the cover to allow it to be attached to the belt.

Warehouse-stored shovels may exhibit minor defects. The shovel is suspended on the left side of the belt, with the cover providing additional protection. It was manufactured between 1984 and 1991 and used by the USSR Armed Forces after the Great Patriotic War. The shovel bears the "Elka" stamp, indicating it underwent quality control inspection.
